The Springs

The springs are located in the trees to the south of the cemetary. This was a regular camping site for the Goshute Indians. In former years the water of the spring would shoot two or three feet into the air before falling back into the pond surrounding the spring. The bottom of the pond is quicksand. At one time a pump house stood at the mouth of the springs and water was pumped into the mountain mining camps of Mannin and Mercer. The bath houses for the men of Johnston's army were also located near the springs. If you walk back toward town, and enter on the street where the Inn is located you will pass the site of the old flour mill. It burned down, but some of the old machinery can still be seen in the grass not far from the new highway. The trees along this street were planted more than one hundred years ago.
