Dobieville or Frogtown

The arrival of Johnston's army was quickly followed by the coming of hundreds of merchants, entertainers, and camp followers hoping to get a share of the money the army would be spending.

At least seventeen saloons were built along this street, many of them out of adobe, hence the name Dobieville. One soldier said "it was quite a place, inits way, built on two streets principally occupied by drinking saloons and stores, some of them kept in very good style. The drinking saloons all had gambling going on in abundance. Besides these there were ten-pin alleys, billiard saloons, and a very good theater, which was well attended, and occasionally a circus."
