John's Trip to the East Coast

After graduating from BYU, the twins both married and followed their husbands to different areas of service during the Viet Nam War. Kathryn and Mel were in Norfolk, Virginia and Margaret and Leo were at Fort Rucker, Alabama. John came back to visit and then returned home with Kathryn and Mel via Alabama when their service in the Marine Corps ended. The following are the notes about the trip that John wrote down (on very small paper). He and Mel had a very wonderful, fun filled time while I was finishing up my first year teaching.

5/31/69
Flight to Denver, Chicago (green beret), Washington. Landed just at twilight. Humidity. Saw sights (Georgetown, stayed at Marilyn's.

6/1/69
Saw Arlington, white house, Annapolis, returned to Virginia through tunnel.

6/2/69
Saw Norfolk, navel yards, air base (moth balls) tunnel again.

Met Marilyn and Danny and left for Norfolk.

6/5/69

6/6/69

6/7/69
Saw Gettysburg, Harpers Ferry. (Peter Pan Raceway-bad) Mila track better. Home in Norfolk.

6/8/69
Loafed, Marines Museum, Chesapeake track good.

6/9/69
Rested, packed, played cards with Suzy and Rich

6/10/69
War Memorial and Marines Museum

6/11/69
Packed and had dessert at Mary and Ernie Floristanos

6/12/69
Got everything shipped and had b-b-q with Rich and Suzy.

6/13/69
Left early, Saw Mel's friend in Black Mt. North Carolina and arrived at Margaret's late. (Fort Rucker)

The Tunnel that John refers to is about 5 miles long and 3 miles of it is completely under water---so it's like driving along for what seems forever in a cement tube. I thought it was scary. John probably appreciated the engineering feat.
John and Mel also visited as many slot car tracks as they could and then John rated them (better, bad and good).
